PPT-Level
NO Detection
INTRODUCTION
Within the cold-box of ethylene plants, build-up
of NOx (NO and NO2) is a significant safety
concern, as it may lead to accumulation of
unstable liquid or solid nitrogen oxide
deposits. Such unstable deposits have led to
several serious explosions and overpressure
conditions during shutdowns and cold-section
warm-ups.
NOx
CHEMISTRY IN THE COLD-BOX
Though NO2 is removed from the gases during the
scrubbing process, NO, NH3, and O2 remain in the
system. As the temperature decreases and the gas
stays in one place for a longer period, NO and
O2 are more likely to react, creating NO2 and
N2O4. As the temperature decreases further yet
in the cold-box, NO and NO2 convert ot N2O3. If
NH3 is present, NOx reacts to deposit salts.
Though these accumulations of
liquid and solid NOx and salts may cause
equipment plugging, frequently there is no
external signal alerting operators to the
presence of these deposits.
HAZARDOUS
CONDITIONS
If the cold-box is allowed to warm (i.e., during
system shutdown) while gas is flowing in the
system, the deposits begin to decompose into NO
and NO2, which will readily react with olefinic
material, forming "gums". These gums are
explosive at cryogenic temperatures. Thus, since
NOx deposits indicate the presence of a strong
oxidizing agent within a flammable gas flow, it
is clear that any decomposition of these
deposits may result in a dangerous, if not
life-threatening, explosion.
HAZARD
AVOIDANCE
It is clear that build-up of NOx within the
cold-box is to be avoided, and detection of the
presence of NOx in the process stream is the
first-step in creating a safe process
environment. C.I. Analytics is committed to
being part of this safe workplace.
C.I. AND
NOx DETECTION
The C.I. Model 2020PGC Analyzer, equipped with
our state-of-the-art Nitrogen Chemiluminescence
Detector detects PPT-LEVELS of NOx in the
cold-box, creating the "first line of defense"
against potentially hazardous conditions! |
